Who are we?
Recyclage Carbone Varennes : A unique technological showcase in North America.
Recyclage Carbone Varennes (RCV) will be the first biomethanol production plant and the largest producer of green hydrogen in Québec. By early 2026, our plant will produce biofuel from waste, residual biomass, and green hydrogen.
Our environmental contribution will be twofold: helping the maritime industry go green with our biomethanol and upcycling waste that would otherwise end up in landfills.

World-class partners
Recyclage Carbone Varennes is the result of collaboration between several strategic partners.
- Shell and Suncor, leaders in refining operations, for safe, reliable production.
- Proman, a global leader in methanol production and distribution.
- Investissement Québec, whose support demonstrates a collective commitment to sustainable development and innovation in Québec.
- The governments of Québec and Canada, who also support the Varennes Carbon Recycling mission.
Major economic benefits for Québec
During the construction phase, more than 500 jobs will be created, providing many opportunities in the region. Once operational, the plant will create around 100 permanent, high-quality jobs.
The plant is expected to generate annual spinoffs of over $155 million. The project will also have a structuring effect on the Québec economy, thanks to its positive impact on the environment and circular economy, the use of innovative Québec technology, and the creation of high value-added jobs.

Redevelopment of a former industrial site
Recyclage Carbone Varennes selected the strategic location of the Contrecœur-Varennes industrial port zone. Using the decontaminated former industrial site of Petromont, where the plant closed in 2009, also helps to reduce the project’s environmental footprint.
The location of the Varennes industrial park along the river was a decisive factor, since it allows goods to flow efficiently while minimizing impact.
